Seven Cherry Picks Ratings Betting System Ideas

We often receive emails asking how best to use the information provided by the JustStartHere service. On Saturday 10 October 2015 we looked at seven different aproaches that you can set and forget from 11.00am.

All seven level stakes systems turned a profit and made a combined return of +272.31 points after Betfair commission. The full results can be viewed here. The selections were made using the 11.00am prices but all the returns are based on Betfair starting prices.

Please note that not all UK and IRE races qualified - only those that were fully rated (i.e. where every horse had a Cherry Picks rating). The fully rated races are those listed on the daily Cherry Picks PDFs and spreadsheets.

As with all systems, they can be adapted to individual betting preferences. Some might suit further filtering, a sensible staking plan or a stop-at-profit approach for example. Similar principles and ideas can also be applied to the price movement data.

It goes without saying that you should paper-trade systems until you are comfortable with them and then only bet with money that you can afford to lose, perhaps making use of a suitable betting bank.

It's also good practice to have a portfolio of systems that compliment each other. No system will make a profit every day, so it makes sense to try and balance out or reduce losses incurred from one approach with profit from others.

Of course, there is no guarantee that these systems will continue to be successful in the long term but we hope they provide some inspiration.

System 1

For this approach, you back as many of the highly rated horses in each race as possible, starting with the top-rated one and working your way down to the point that, should the horse with the lowest odds that you've backed win, you would at least break even (or make a small loss after commission).

So, if the horse with the lowest odds in the top five has a back price of 5.00 at 11.00am, you back the the top five horses to win. In situations where backing a low priced horse means you would make a loss, you back horses up to, but not including, that horse. Below are two examples (qualifying selections highlighted in green):

This system allows you to capitalise on high priced winners with high Cherry Picks ratings.


System 2

This system has the same qualifying criteria as System 1 but instead of backing all horses to win, you back the horses with odds of 10.00 or more at 11.00am to place.

System 3

For this system you simply back each of the top three rated horses to win.

This system involves backing all horses with positive or zero Cherry Picks ratings and 11.00am odds of 10.00 or more to win.

System 5

This system has the same qualifying criteria as System 4 but instead of backing the horses to win, you back them to place.

System 6

This system involves backing horses with at least one Newspaper (NP) Tip and 11.00am odds of 10.00 or more to win.

System 7

This system has the same qualifying criteria as System 6 but instead of backing the horses to win, you back them to place.
